Duplex stainless steels derive their name from their two-phase microstructure consisting of austenitic and ferritic alloys in roughly equal parts (the exact metallurgic proportions vary by grade). As a result, duplex stainless steel grades combine the favorable qualities and benefits of austenitic and ferritic alloys while minimizing their weaknesses. No comparable alternatives deliver its cost-effective performance, high strength, and excellent corrosion resistance at its price point.
Grade 2205 is the commonly used grade of duplex stainless steel. It is comprised of increased levels of chromium, molybdenum, nickel, and nitrogen. The resulting alloy offers superior pitting, stress cracking, and crevice corrosion resistance in severe environments and extreme applications than austenitic stainless steels (such as Grades 304, 316, and 316L). Also, the yield strength of Duplex 2205 is double that of austenitic stainless steel.
Some of the key advantages and benefits of Grade 2205 stainless steel include:
- Superior corrosion tolerance, including high resistance to crevice corrosion and chloride pitting
- High yield strength, including twice the strength of austenitic and ferritic stainless steel grades
- Good weldability and formability
- Enhanced durability and toughness
- Low thermal expansion
- High-energy absorption
- Affordability
- Elevated temperature resistance
- Easy to maintain and clean
Grade 2205 Stainless Steel Plate Applications
Because of its superior overall corrosion resistance, Grade 2205 duplex stainless steel is mostly frequently used in high-chloride and saltwater environments, oil and gas production, and chemical processing. It is commonly found in heat exchangers, piping, pressure vessels, food-processing equipment, cargo tanks for ships and trucks, and evaporators. Finally, its lightweight but high-yield strength makes it ideal for outdoor load-bearing applications (for example, pedestrian footbridges).
