Like Grade 304 stainless steel, Grade 316 is an austenitic stainless steel grade popular in corrosion-resistant and product-purity applications. This alloy is a blend of chromium (16-18 percent), nickel (10-14 percent), molybdenum (2-3 percent), and a small amount of carbon. Adding molybdenum enhances several key material properties, including improved corrosion and chloride-pitting resistance and enhanced strength and toughness in elevated temperatures. This grade is the second most popular stainless steel grade after Grade 304.
Grade 316L is a lower carbon version of its regular counterpart, which makes it the most corrosive-resistant grade of stainless steel. Like Grade 304, both versions of Grade 316 are non-magnetic and do not require post-weld annealing.
Grade 316 and 316L stainless steel offers exceptional performance and versatility at an economical cost. Some of the key advantages and benefits include:
- Superior corrosion and oxidization resistance
- High heat tolerance
- Enhanced durability, strength, and toughness
- Easy to clean and maintain
- High resistance to staining
- Excellent pitting resistance
- High ease of fabrication
- Superior resistance to chloride
- Higher creep, stress-to-rupture, and tensile strength in elevated temperatures
- Great formability, machinability, and weldability
- Attractive and appealing appearance
- Non-magnetic
